Inner Images II.

computer installation; 1995

This installation is more or less based on based on the similar concept as the first part of the series: the functioning of an artificial neural network is made visible. The software program is a simplified model of an infant's vision. It gives emotional reacton to shapes that are considered human faces. The program itself has a face too. Changes of emotions can be followed on the expressions of an animated baby face. In this second part of the series I made the visualization a bit more complex too. Processess of the neural network were projected on a spatial screen.

The theme of my work is inspired by the 'competent infant' researches of modern cognitive psychology. These researches claim that even newborn babies have the ability to distinguish between certain shapes, and one of their first achievements is to prefer human faces an alike figures to other shapes.
