computer installation; 1995

Jean Clair's theory suggests that new artistic models come from the fields of biology and genetics: from the fields of research on the organism, creation and the mysteries of life. In the past few years my attention have turned towards neural models, driven by artistic, not scientific aims. I believe that by modelling (even if only partially) the functioning of the human nervous system we get closer to the understanding of existence and creation.

In my artistic program, scheduled for several years, I wish to reach two different goals: on one hand, I would like to create technically and scientifically high level neural models. On the other hand, I'd like to make the inner states of these models visible.

The first piece of this series was a computer installation with a video projection. An artificial neural network was capable of distinguishing between vertical and horizontal lines in the live picture of a video camera. Meanwhile, I made the continuous changes of the neural network visible in space, by projecting it on a huge concave screen.
