The Endre Ady library of Baja – Where they look after that french Bible of Ady that was printed in StPeterburg – working in a late Calssicist  synagogue and in an old  people’s home that is next to it.

Before establishing this library many other small libraries worked in Baja, and also many reading clubs were functioning as a library partly church releted partly state related. ( Man’s Club, Industry Corporation, Civil Reading Club, Public Administrative Library, Csitanica, Cistercians, Franciscans Library etd.)

The István Türr Museum always/ from the begining had a reference library. After the World War II. its stock was about 5.800 volume. In 1947 Dr Endre Takács became in charge of the library, who increased the stock up to 22.481 volume.

He  acquired the Public Administrative Library, the National Cassino library. With the help of the minister of endangered private collections he got hold of the Hadik-Barkóczy counts, the György Zichy count’s library, the Bethlen’s library and other civilian’s libraray from Baja who emigrated to the west.

Therefore Baja’s library is still a noted library of Hungary.

Through years many place became small for a working library and a town continously tried to find a bettter solution. Seemed to be a good idea to renovate and convert the synagogue into a library.

The synagogue was built between 1842 and 1845 in a late classicist style. During the World War II. most Jewesh people from Baja was carryed away and executed. The left behind / Who survived at about 300 people are sated up a memorial place in the garden of the synagogue  - on marble tablets more than one thousand name are listed.

From the 70’s the jews were not able to keep and rebuild the synagogue so they sold it to the town.

After the necessarry works the library opened on the 22nd of october 1985. The Children’s library opened on the 1st of December 1993 in the ex- almshouse that is next to the synagogue.

Today the synagogue is a cultural center of this multicultural town, not only with the library that has 170,000 volume, but it is also a center of other cultural events, lectures, concerts where every vistor is wellcomed who curious to see the building, the incunabula, nyomd roman, and that 4325 books that vas printed up to the begining of the 19 century.
