Nora's Chili Recipe - RED, GOLD, BLACK AND GREEN CHILI -- Serves 4 to 6Based on "Moosewood Restaurant Cooks At Home"
slightly revised from my experience with it. (It also Per serving: 190 calories; 6.8 g. protein; 5.8 g. fat;
30.4 g. Lasagna SandwichesI have no idea
who came up with this one. But we
dragged leftover lasagna along for lunch one day not realizing that we were
completely out of lunch meats, etc.
Not a problem for this food inventive group someone sliced some
lasagna and put it between two pieces of bread and soon everyone was eating
lasagna sandwiches. Maria's Paella & Salmon/Potato SoupPlease send the recipe and we'll add to the site! |
Alvaro's Mixed Tape All passengers in the van were pleased
when during week ii Alvaro produced a mixed tape to help us avoid the
horrors of country music radio. Made
for him by a friend in Spain (all hail this friend), the tape included: Jimi Hendrix Janis Joplin Iggy Pop Marilyn Manson Creedance Metallica Monster Magnet Red Hot Chili Peppers Rolling Stones Led Zeppelin Rammstein Judas Priest Dream Theater Thin Lizzy
Moby PLAYAlthough it was unclear whether this was
Maria's tape or Alvaro's we spent many, many, hours listening to a
continuous loop of PLAY. Sorry folks
there are no lyrics in the CD packaging (turns out my roommate had it in her
collection in NYC). Diabolique & Open Your Eyes Selected because they were excellent films
in French & Spanish w/English subtitles everyone took part in this part
of video nights. It was agreed that
this original Diabolique was better than the Sharon Stone remake. And that while entirely confusing at
points that Open Your Eyes had a refreshing point of view. Hearts of DarknessLuc & Nadine selected this documentary about
the making of Apocalypse Now because they are both big fans of the
file. It completely described the
clear insanity of the filmmaking process. PiA favorite of Luc's documents the
breakdown of a mathematical genius.
Set in NYC with Chinatown and the subways playing a major role the
high point of this film is how the score and cinematography contribute to the
stage of complete mental collapse. The Prince of TidesLaura was plugging away at this novel by
Pat Conroy during the entire trip. It
is a perfect travel read
with a long and complicated story line. And the movie isn't entirely awful either. The New YorkerTwo outdated issues were passed around the
group. It is suspected that the
cartoons are as popular as the stories. Einstein's DreamsAlthough a better idea than a novel
Lightman (a professor of physics and writing at MIT) attempts to give us a
humanistic glimpse into a brief moment in the life of Einstein through a
series of dreams about time. |
Typical ConversationWhat time is the van leaving? So what time do we have to get up? Will you wake me up? What does that word mean? Could you spell it? No, that is past tense that is not what I mean. Do you have that word in English? Bless You! Thank You! You're Welcome! Thank You! You're Welcome! Thank You! You're Welcome! Thank You! You're Welcome! Thank You! You're Welcome! Thank You! Sorry Sorry Sorry Sorry Sorry What time is the van leaving? Where are you sleeping? Were you snoring? I think we are out of ___________ (beer, bread, cereal, mustard, etc.). Typical Workday ConversationWhat time is lunch? How long are we working today? No, I don't think we have to do that. When can we take a break? Can we smoke here? Where are my gloves? Have you seen my water bottle? Where is the lighter? Where is the mustard? Did we forget the mustard? Are there any serviettes? Are there any cups? What do you mean we are out of bread? Luc, what time is it? ? I think it is time to quit. Is it time to stop I think we are quitting
at 2:00 today, right? What do you
mean we have to unload it at the dump?
Will Darren be there? Is there
anywhere to do horseback riding? Spanish NightsA term coined by Luc for Alvaro and Maria's
late night picnic table conversations. Open Your Eyes Here let me help you A banter between Maria and Luc about the
best way to help Maria wake up in the morning. Cursing in other languagesQuick our language had deteriorated to
profanity in a variety of languages with F*%#&K
being a particular favorite. The Finland StoryMaria has participated in 8 work camps
and told us about many of them. Our
person favorite was the story of the sauna and the lake
that included a
prolonged back and forth with Maria running from the extreme heat of the
sauna to the freezing cold of the lake and back again. You had to be there
but we were in
tears. White Trash & Red NecksMaking every effort to understand the
culture in America much time was spent understanding the concept of white
trash and red necks. Darren gave the
best definition
explaining that to be either you must owe at least two red
cars (and a gun wouldn't hurt either). The Coin TossAnother priceless moment on the day of the
giant rusty object trash clean up at Moses Coulee three people had to go to
the dump to empty the truck (a thankless job at best). Laura and Maria had volunteered Luc
& Alvaro had been recruited but one wasn't needed. It was decided to toss a coin to decide
who would go
Luc picked heads
it was tails
and Alvaro said, "I want to
go to the dump." ??? Luc looked dumbfounded. Huh? |
