Introducing the process
"TOWARDS A EUROPE FOR JUSTICE"
The word Kairos, is from Greek mythology, and also referred to in the Holy Scriptures meaning; "the gracious and decisive moment for change; an opportunity for amelioration".
For Kairos Europa that moment is now. Now is the time to change "Fortress Europe"; now is the time to set credible signs of reconciliation among humanity and nature; now is the time to work "towards a Europe for Justice".
WHAT IS KAIROS EUROPA?
Kairos Europa is a European decentralised network of justice, peace and creation initiatives working in collaboration with churches, social movements, trade unions and non-governmental organisations both in and outside Europe, for a more just and tolerant society.
It is the European regional manifestation of the Kairos process, which started within the Anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa in 1985.
It is a process that provides a platform on the European level for a more holistic approach at addressing the injustice, the violence and the general decay of society, adopting a non-single issue perception and favouring a dual strategy of local and global action, with a decentralised and bottom-up methodology.
ABOUT KAIROS EUROPA
THE MILESTONE
In 1992 Kairos Europa organised "the Peoples Parliament", a seven-day event that brought over 500 representatives of grassroots groups and networks from all over the world to the European Parliament in Strasbourg was an important phase of the process. It saw the initiation of a process of change, linking small groups, organisations and networks in solidarity with the alienated and socially excluded, to work for social Justice.
STRUCTURE AND MEMBERSHIP
Kairos Europa has an open membership policy that enables groups, organisations and networks to participate as members or as partners in the conceptualisation, the planning and the implementation of programme lines. It has a decentralised structure that enables programme lines to operate autonomously, with the main obligation of sharing and consulting with other programme lines to develop joint lines of action. It has a Management Committee (MC) which is made up of representatives of the various Kairos Centres and Programme Lines. Assisted by the Office in Brussels, the MC is responsible for co-ordination and the management of the activities of the Kairos process. The annual meeting of the International Co-ordination Group (ICG) is responsible for policy and the adoption of new programme lines and centres.
FINANCES
Kairos Europa is a non-profit, non-governmental international coalition of organisations and community-based groups, relying mainly on contribution by members, private donations and financial support from the World Council Churches, the European Commission and church foundations to fund its projects and activities.
