What’s wrong with my software?

QuickDNS Manager:

Q: When I try to create a zone with the assistant it tells me "Can’t create zone because you are not connected to any servers by name."

A: Try connecting to your servers with names rather then IP addresses. If your Server doesn’t have a name yet, create a zone for the IP address.

1. Connect to the server via IP address.
2. Create a master zone on the server using a domain name that you control.
3. Pick a name in the zone for your DNS server. Explanatory names like ns1.<zone> are highly suggested. If the zone is already delegated to your server, use the name in the delegation. If the zone isn't already delegated to this server, make sure that you're running QuickDNS Manager on a machine that uses this server as its resolver. Later, when you register this domain (which sets up the delegation), make sure to use the same name that you defined here. Create NS records and A records, one of each for each server that will host the zone, like this:

<zone name>. NS <name of server>
<name of server> A <IP address of server>

5. Save the zone, disconnect from the server, and then reconnect with the new name.

Q: QuickDNS Manager won’t let me save a zone because some record is malformed.
A: Look for the explanation point in the square at the beginning of each resource record. Alt-click or Option-click the exclamation point (depending on your operating system.) A window will appear explaining the problem with the indicated record.

QuickDNS Remote For Mac 8/9

Q: Manager says it's unable to connect.
A:
1. Make sure QuickDNS Remote is running on the same server as QuickDNS Server.

2. Make sure that the QuickDNS Remote application file is located in the QuickDNS application folder - don't move the actual application file to your Startup Items folder.

3. Check that the folder named "QuickDNS Data" in your QuickDNS application folder has the following files:

QuickDNS Options
QuickDNS Log
Secondary Domains
Secondary Domains (disabled)

It should also contain the following folders:

Primary Data
Primary Data (disabled)
Secondary Data
Secondary Data (disabled)

If any of these are missing, use the following steps to correct the problem:

QuickDNS Options: Launch QuickDNS Server. It will ask you for a password for remote administration, after which it will create a new QuickDNS Options file with default settings.
QuickDNS Log: Launch QuickDNS, a new QuickDNS log file will be created automatcly.
Secondary Domains or
Secondary Domains
(disabled): Install a fresh copy of QuickDNS. Take the newly-installed copy of the missing file and put it in your working QuickDNS Data folder.
Folders: Create a new folder with the appropriate name.

QuickDNS Server for Mac 8/9

Q: QuickDNS Server won’t answer queries. What should I do?
A: The most common cause of this problem is a lack of RAM. Try allocating additional RAM to QuickDNS Server. You'll know you have allocated sufficient RAM if, immediately after launching QuickDNS Server, its statistics window's free memory reading shows a number of at least 1048576 (1 MB).

Only 1/2 MB is used for the actual application, the remaining memory is reserved for caching. So if memory allocation is increased to 10MB, 9.5MB will be used for caching.

Load Balancing

Almost all questions regarding QuickDNS Load Balancer can be resolved by launching QuickDNS Load Balancer on ALL servers for a particular zone. QuickDNS Load Balancer is only available for QuickDNS Server.

Q: Load balance records, I turned off one of my servers to test, but my browser keeps hitting the old server.
A: Many browsers maintain a resident memory separate from any TTL settings. Try quitting your browser and relaunching it.

Q: I turned off one of my two web servers as a test, but half my hits are still directed to that server
A: QuickDNS Load Balancer needs to be running on all of your QuickDNS servers, master and slave alike.

QuickDNS Server for OS X

Q: Its broke, what do I do?
A: Reinstall. If reinstallation doesn’t work, contact support.
