How do I move a DNS server or zone?

Q: How do I rename a DNS Server?
A:
1. Create an A record for the new name.
2. Change all NS records to point to the new name.
3. Disconnect from the server and reconnect with the new name.
4. Go to whoever controls the parent zone, such as a domain registrar, and have them change your delegation. Ask them to rename your server, or delete the old server name, and then enter the new server name.

Q: How do I change IP address of my DNS Server?
A:
1. Change the A record.
2. Disconnect QuickDNS Manager from the server.
3. Change the IP address of the server. This may involve moving it to a new location. You will most likely need to reboot the server.
4. Make sure your slave servers point to the new IP address. This can be accomplished by looking at the zone options dialog (for every zone) in QuickDNS Manager.
5. Go to whoever controls the parent zone of your main zone (e.g. a domain registrar) and change their record of your server's IP address. This change will then affect all of your zones, since you're not changing the name of your server.

Q: How do I transfer control of a zone from someone else’s DNS server?
A:
1. Move or recreate the data on the new server; if you can get a zone transfer, use that.
2. Ask parent zone to change their delegation records. This may require getting permission of registered owner if it is other than you.
3. Ask old DNS service provider to remove the zone from their servers.
