GÁBRIEL ASZTRIK PROFESSZOR KÖSZÖNTÉSE
A magyar történetítás nagy öregjét, a 90. évét betöltött Gábriel Asztrik
professzor urat köszöntjük ezzel a számunkkal. A valóság és az imént leírt
"nagy öreg" fordulat Gábriel professzor úr személyét illetően a legnagyobb
ellentmondás, amit valaha láttam és megtapasztaltam. Noha évei valóban
kilencvenet számolnak, életereje, szellemi frissessége, tettereje és terve
egy életerős tudósról tanúskodnak. Ad multos annos! Isten éltesse Gábriel
professzor urat még számos éven át, hogy mindannyiunk örömére és tudományos
épülésére, mind a történettudomány hazai, mind pedig a nemzetközi művelői
előtt is a tőle megszokott módon képviselje magyarságunkat és európaiságunkat.
Őszinte örömömre szolgált, hogy 1998. március 7-én Torontóban a METEM tízéves
fennállása és eredményes működése tiszteletére rendezett díszvacsorán a
MKPK Egyháztörténeti Bizottsága elnökeként átadhattam Gábriel Asztrik professzor
úrnak a Magyar Katolikus Püspöki Kar Pro Ecclesia Hungaricae emlékérmet
és felolvashattam Excellenciás és Főtisztelendő dr. Seregély István elnök-érsek
gratuláló és tudományos munkásságát méltató levelét.

PROFESSOR GABRIEL ASTRIK
This number of Studies in Church History is presented to the Grand Old
Man of Hungarian historiography, Professor Gabriel Astrik, in honour of
his ninetieth birthday. Reality and the above expression "Grand Old Man"
referring to Professor Gabriel are in the most striking contradiction I
have ever seen and experienced. Though the number of his years may be ninety,
his vitality, mental alertness, energy and plans for the future show us
a scholar full of vigour. Ad multos annos! God preserve him and keep him
among us for several years to come, in order that - to the great pleasure
of all of us and for the improvement of our minds - he may represent our
Hungarian as well as European qualities, on the high level so characteristic
of him and so well known to the Hungarian and other members of the international
community of the historical profession.
It was a real pleasure to me that, on the 7th of March, 1998, at the ceremonial
dinner held in Toronto in honour of the tenth anniversary of the existence
and successful activity of the METEM, as the chairman of the Ecclesiastical
Historical Committe of the Hungarian Roman Catholic Episcopate, I had the
honour to present to Professor Gabriel Astrik the Pro Ecclesia Hungaricae
medal awarded by the Hungarian Roman Catholic Episcopate and to read the
letter addressed to him by His Excellency, the most Reverend Archbishop
and head of this body, István Seregély, who sent his best wishes and felicitations
and expressed his appreciation for Professor Gabriel's scholarly work.
