PRESENTATION OF THE CAMPAIGN
Globalization of Peoples
Campaign for awareness building of new North/South relations
The gap between the North and South of the world has in recent years undergone a further acceleration. Over a billion people can consider themselves completely outside the circuits of the world economy. For more than a quarter of the population of the planet the project of economic growth imposed in the last decades can be considered a complete failure.
The globalization of the economy also upsets the balances in the industrialized countries by exposing large sectors of workers to unemployment and promoting the tendency to repress social and democratic conquests. To all this we must add the constant deteriorization of the state of the environment and the demographic forecasts that are certainly not favourable for a re-equilibrium of the world situation.
Globalization of peoples is a campaign of sensitization aimed at promoting the construction of an alternative culture on these themes and the birth of a new awareness regarding relations between the rich areas and the poor areas of the planet.
Progetto Continenti, International Community of Capodarco,
Starting date: March 1996
To whom it is addressed
to all those who in one way or another contribute to the creation of culture and formation on their own territory or at national level (individuals, associations or groups involved in the themes of solidarity, peace and environment; cultural associations, teachers and educators, journalists, local bodies, syndicates, mass media).
increase the knowledge and awareness of the civil society on the main causes of the imbalances between the North and South of the world; permit individuals and associations to become competent multipliers on their own territory of the themes dealt with; promote the growth of the exchange of information and expertise between groups and associations
An information system with Monographic reports (issues of about 35 pages each), edited by a scientific Committee, is the main instrument for the realization of the Campaign. The lay-out of the reports is of a scientific-popular type, so as to promote the in-depth study of the themes even for those who do not have sufficient knowledge of them.
They are furthermore structured in a schematic way and enriched with boxes and tables, so that they can be used in the most varied situations and contexts (schools, teacher refresher courses, seminars, conferences, courses, professional updates, etc.).
The monographies are accompanied by other small series of materials such as Dossiers (in-depth studies on individual problems mentioned in the Reports), Documents (that provide official stands of large organizations or international Campaigns on questions of greater relevance in the North/South debate), Instruments (through which a panorama of certain situations is provided), Experiences (analyses of those subjects in the field able to prefigure alternative scenarios).
The local dimension and the national situation
The Campaign promotes the creation of local networks aimed at increasing the value and effectiveness of the action of sensitization and of determining common strategies among associations. At the beginning of its third year of activity the Campaign sees about 40 provincial coordinations involved to which, overall, about 300 groups and associations belong.
Numerous other addressees periodically receive the publications of the Campaign: individuals, associations, groups, syndicates, journalists, teachers, who use the material as instruments for in-depth studies, divulgation and up-date, both in association and professional circles.
The coordinators and experts of the Campaign collaborate with local groups in the creation of initiatives for presenting the Reports, in awareness building in schools, in contacts with the mass media. In its third year of life the Campaign has already seen the implementation of numerous initiatives:
- seminars, conventions and debates on the many problems linked to the phenomena of globalization of the economy
- up-date courses for teachers
- intervention in schools
- basic courses on international economy
- divulgation through mass media of the themes of the Campaign
In course of implementation
Actions of awareness creation on questions of urgent relevance such as, for example, the discussion at the OECD of the M.A.I. - Multilateral Agreement on Investments, and the question of the foreign debt of the countries of the South of the world.
The constitution of an Interassociative Resource Bank , "place" of exchange between associations - where to ask/offer material, skills, experts, in such a way as to enrich the common patrimony and tend the potential of each group.
The programming of formation courses for formators, aimed at those, in the world of associationism, who are really interested in carrying out, as a priority commitment, the task of formators, that of persons able to carry out interventions on the territory in a systematic way and repeatedly over a period of time ("bare-foot economists)
