Tobias WOLFF is the author of This Boy's Life (1989), In Pharaoh's Army, Hunters in the Snow. He received the Pen/Faulkner Award for his short novel The Barracks Thief. The present story appeared in his 1981 short story collection In the Garden of the North American Martyrs.
