The Code

Lecture and performance by
Gusztáv Hámos, Miklós Peternák and Zoltán Szegedy-Maszák
Goethe-Institut Budapest
Opening: March 19, 7pm (exhibition open until March 25)

"We will have to re-code all of literature, the entire real and imaginary library of our culture, into digital codes, in order to feed it into artificial memories and to be able to recall it from there. We will have to recode everything still to be written, all those yet imperfected trains of thought which are embedded in our text, into digital codes. And indeed, if we see in digital codes the articulation of a radically new way of thinking which cannot be called writing any longer, then we will have to say that we will be forced to delete the whole real and imaginary library, with all its assets and all those imperfected deliberations embedded in our memory, in order to grant this space to everything new."

Vilém Flusser, Die Schrift (The Writing), Fischer-Verlag Wissenschaft (p.134)

(translation: M. Müller-Wieferig)

On the occasion of the 6th International Vilém Flusser Symposium, Gusztáv Hámos (Berlin/Budapest), Miklós Peternák and Zoltán Szegedy-Maszák will present a multimedia event focusing on the interactivity between the audience, the various media forms and media theoreticians, within the theme of coding. "The coding of thoughts by letters and words, the digitalisation of texts, the decoding of nature with the aid of logarithms, and the musical coding of cinematographic movements." (Gusztáv Hámos) All of this on the Internet, in music and in video, based on the works of Walter Werdin, Woody and Steina Vasulka, Gábor Bódy, and Martin Potthof. We shall see pictures coded by sounds, intermezzos of images coded into numbers, and, if it is possible, the other way around, as well. The installation prepared for the evening of 19 March (7pm) can be viewed until 26 March at the Goethe-Institut Budapest, Monday - Friday, from 10am to 6pm.
