The FAIRE program was started in 1997 as an international program based at the Energy Club in Budapest, Hungary. The target countries for the program were: Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. FAIRE is a program to improve the capacity for international cooperation among activists working on energy issues in the nuclear countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It includes a three month intensive course in English language, followed by a seminar which provides participants with further training as well as networking opportunity. FAIRE students then go on a 3- to 6-month internship with a non-profit organization (NPO). In the final stage of the whole project interns develop and implement a project or campaign in their home countries in cooperation with the organizations. From 1997 to 1998, 20 people became "Faire-ies" and the FAIRE network includes more than 50 people from many organizations from CEE, CIS and West Europe.
